These areas are designed to build on the knowledge and skills students have developed in earlier years and prepare them for senior secondary mathematics. Here are the main subject areas:

  1. Number and Algebra

    • Real Numbers
    • Patterns and Algebra
    • Linear and Non-Linear Relationships
  2. Measurement and Geometry

    • Using Units of Measurement
    • Geometric Reasoning
    • Pythagoras and Trigonometry
  3. Statistics and Probability

    • Chance
    • Data Representation and Interpretation

These broad areas cover various specific topics such as:

  • Real Numbers: Understanding and working with rational and irrational numbers, solving problems involving percentages, rates, and ratios.
  • Patterns and Algebra: Simplifying algebraic expressions, solving linear equations, and working with algebraic fractions.
  • Linear and Non-Linear Relationships: Graphing and interpreting linear and quadratic functions, solving systems of equations.
  • Using Units of Measurement: Converting units, solving problems involving perimeter, area, surface area, and volume.
  • Geometric Reasoning: Understanding and proving geometric properties, working with congruence and similarity.
  • Pythagoras and Trigonometry: Applying Pythagoras' theorem and trigonometric ratios to solve problems involving right-angled triangles.
  • Chance: Understanding and calculating probabilities, working with compound events.
  • Data Representation and Interpretation: Collecting, representing, and interpreting data, understanding statistical measures.
