Maths Grade 4

Weekly 1 hour session.

Grade 4 Mathematics in Australia follows the Australian Curriculum, which is designed to develop students' mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. The key subject areas for Grade 4 Mathematics are:

  1. Number and Algebra

    • Number and Place Value: Understanding numbers up to at least tens of thousands, including place value, odd and even numbers, and factors and multiples.
    • Fractions and Decimals: Recognizing common equivalent fractions, ordering and comparing fractions, and understanding decimal notation to tenths and hundredths.
    • Money and Financial Mathematics: Solving problems involving purchases and calculating change.
    • Patterns and Algebra: Identifying and continuing number patterns, exploring the relationship between multiplication and division, and using number sentences to solve problems.
  2. Measurement and Geometry

    • Using Units of Measurement: Understanding and converting between different units of measurement for length, mass, volume, and time. Calculating area and perimeter of simple shapes.
    • Shape: Identifying and describing the properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects, including angles and symmetry.
    • Location and Transformation: Using simple maps and grids, understanding the concept of coordinates, and describing the position and movement of objects.
    • Geometric Reasoning: Recognizing and classifying angles (acute, obtuse, right) and understanding angle properties.
  3. Statistics and Probability

    • Chance: Describing and ordering the likelihood of everyday events using terms such as certain, likely, unlikely, and impossible.
    • Data Representation and Interpretation: Collecting, organizing, and displaying data in various forms, such as tables, column graphs, and picture graphs. Interpreting data to draw conclusions and answer questions.

These subject areas ensure that students build a strong foundation in mathematics, preparing them for more advanced concepts in higher grades.
