Maths Grade 9

Weekly 1 hour session.

Grade 9 Mathematics in Australia follows the Australian Curriculum and is designed to develop students' mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. The key subject areas for Grade 9 Mathematics are:

  1. Number and Algebra

    • Real Numbers: Extending understanding of real numbers, including irrational numbers. Performing operations with surds and exponentials.
    • Money and Financial Mathematics: Solving problems involving simple and compound interest.
    • Patterns and Algebra: Expanding and factorizing algebraic expressions, including binomials. Solving quadratic equations and understanding their graphs.
    • Linear and Non-linear Relationships: Analyzing and solving linear and quadratic equations. Understanding and using the Cartesian plane to graph and interpret linear and quadratic relationships.
  2. Measurement and Geometry

    • Using Units of Measurement: Calculating and solving problems involving the surface area and volume of cylinders, spheres, and other composite solids.
    • Geometric Reasoning: Applying geometric properties and theorems to solve problems involving angles, triangles, and other polygons. Understanding and proving congruence and similarity in triangles.
    • Pythagoras and Trigonometry: Applying Pythagoras' theorem and trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, and tangent) to find unknown sides and angles in right-angled triangles. Solving problems in two dimensions and three dimensions.
  3. Statistics and Probability

    • Chance: Understanding and calculating probabilities of single and multiple events using fractions, decimals, and percentages. Applying the concepts of conditional probability and independence.
    • Data Representation and Interpretation: Collecting, organizing, and interpreting data using various representations, such as histograms, box plots, and scatter plots. Analyzing data to identify patterns, trends, and relationships. Understanding and calculating measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and spread (range, interquartile range, standard deviation).

These subject areas ensure that students build a comprehensive understanding of mathematical concepts, preparing them for more advanced studies in mathematics in subsequent years.
